The WRX isn't the only Subaru to offer a big bang for your buck

This spot could have been filled by various versions of Subaru’s feisty WRX, but the family-friendly Liberty edges Rex in the area of practicality.

With $15k to spend, GT buyers will be able to fund a car that has been properly maintained and has the service books to prove it.

Beneath our price cap sits plenty of 2003-08 Generation 4 cars, plus the odd high-kilometre Gen. 5 GT.

Most in this market segment will be five-speed automatics, but you may find a six-speed manual for the money. Libertys are a solid, well-constructed car – wagons weighing around 1480kg – but with 180kW from the quad-cam 2.0-litre and slightly more from later 2.5-litre versions, acceleration is still brisk.
