Lloyds LEAD Lloyds LEAD

Group B Rally racers and incredibly rare Porsches are a taste of what’s available

Lloyd’s Classic European auction taking place this Friday, on May 25th, holds many a gem for the Europhiles out there.

Headlined by a Group B rally racer and one very rare Porsche – there’s everything from GT highway cruisers to the quintessential two-door sports coupes.

You can see all of the available lots here, but read on and see our picks of the bunch!

Lot #18 – 1985 MG Metro Group B

The era of Group B rally is one of the most storied racing divisions in motorsport history, celebrated for its purity yet solemnly remembered for its danger.

This MG Metro was factory built to Group B specification and is claimed to be in near concours condition.

Featuring a mid-ship V6, AWD and a miniscule wheelbase, this Metro would be an absolute hoot to drive.

No estimate is specified, but with a current bid of only $11,500, the sky is the limit with this rare beast. We’re very interested to see what it ends up going for.

Lot #35 – 1986 Ferrari Testarossa

The Ferrari Testarossa was, to many, the literal posterchild of the 80s supercar era.

Immortalised under the image of Miami Vice, its unmistakable wedged charm continues to be an ultra-desirable hit with young collectors.

This one features the collectible ‘high-mirrors’ mounted on the A-pillar, quintessential Rosso Corsa paint and only 73,000kms posted on the odo – the car presents in fine and original condition.

Being a younger vintage Fezza than the high-brow classics, we reckon there’s still plenty of upswing on these models in the years to come.

The current bid for this iconic piece of 80s automotive history is $96,000 at the time of writing.

Lot # 924 – 1981 Porsche 924 GTR

This one has us scratching our heads.

The Porsche 924 GTR was essentially a factory-built racecar, of which only 17 are believed to have been built.

Furthermore, in comparing the car’s history, and doing a bit of our own CSI-esque analysis on the photos, we believe this very car to be the same one that appeared in the Silverstone Classic Race Car Sale of 2016… a car that sold for – wait for it - £495,000!

Lloyds -Porsche -924-GTR

Originally delivered (just one of two) to Japan, the car spent most of its life in the hands of one very fastidious and particular collector.

Subsequently, the car appears to come with extensive maintenance history and is reported to be one of the most original 924 GTRs in existence.

We’re not sure how or why it came to Lloyds, let alone Australia, but the current bid sits at $29,500.

We’ll be watching with keen eyes come Friday to see how high the bids climb.
