Falcon XA GT hardtop tops the price charts at Shannons

Torana SL/R 3300, Kombi and Dodge Charger pull solid prices

This XA Ford GT hardtop went for $153,000.

Tonight's Shannons auction saw solid bidding and there were some good buys on offer. The prime Australian lot for the night, a 1972 XA Falcon GT hardtop (lot 73), started the bidding at $120k and settled a touch above the estimate at $153,000.

Perhaps the sentimental favourite was a very original and low mileage 1976 LX Torana SL/R 3300 sedan (lot 74). Its unusual colour and spec attracted lots of interest and resulted in a final price of $46k.

One of the top lots of the night was a 1969 Dodge Charger 440 R/T coupe (lot 71) in red on white, and one of the nicest examples we've seen. It stirred up a protracted bidding war, which finally settled on $105,000. That was still good buying.

There were lots of options for someone on a relatively modest budget. For example a very tidy 1965 long Datsun ute (lot 7) went for $7000.

People looking for something special in Aussie muscle had three HSV Clubsports to choose from (VP, VR and VT - lots 28-30), all of them in good workable condition, that went for $15-18k each.

Solid money was offered for the right car - for example a 1957 Chevrolet Belair Sports Coupe fetched $73k. That was $3k shy of the result for an equally tidy 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE coupe.

A Porsche 930 attracted a top bid of $155k, which wasn't quite enough to get the keys.

Volkswagen Kombis still hold some magic. A 1959 modified split windscreen 23-window unit fetched a solid $121k.

Numberplates continue to attract a stream of investment money, with bidding strong across the range. Top result went to (Vic) 877, which sold for $170k.
