Seventies survivor

It was the seventies, so the whole idea of a mid-sized car with a thumping great V8, a manual transmission some wild colours made perfect sense.

In a feature on the series we noted: "What the SL/R5000 had on its side was swagger. The Monaro was by 1974 aligned with an older, dare we say, more conservative section of the market. The SL/R was an emblem of the cashed-up; brash and loud with its guards pumped out to clear fat wheels, an air-dam, rear duck-tail, stripes and decals it could at least look like a racing car."

While we’ve clearly referred to track cars and the short-run L34 variant in that piece, these days the somewhat less flamboyant L32 with a 253 is still a very welcome sight in most enthusiast sheds.

It also has the distinct advantage of a significantly lower price point than its more race-oriented cousins, while still giving the full seventies driving experience.

Muscle Car Warehouse in Sydney has this one, which looks much as it would have when it was rolled out of the factory. In this shape, it would be a rare survivor, given how many have since been modded with flares and drop-tanks. It’s priced at $120,000.
