The auction world is full of surprises, with big sales and the odd bargain. Here are some of the highlights

1995 Porsche 928 GTS

Sold: $586,500
RM Sothebys

It seems not just air-cooled 911 prices are going ballistic. The best and most desirable of the front engine Porkers was clearly the 928 and the GTS was the pick of the litter. This is one of 26 with a five-speed manual transmission in 1995 and is finished in midnight blue with grey leather trim, a classic 90s combo. It has been driven less than 27,000km and was sold with a swag of docs plus original window sticker, manuals, and service records since new.

1979 Holden VB Commodore SL/E

Sold: $25,000
Shannons

The longest-running model name in Holden history started with the VB Commodore in October 1978 and lasted 39 years of local production. And the price achieved by this no-reserve offering shows if you don’t need a GT badge on your toy, you can snaffle a bargain chrome bumper Aussie classic. This range-topping, original and unmodified SL/E has a 253ci V8 and is a one-family car from new with 150,358km on the clock. It sold with extensive history documents.

1970 Ford Falcon XW GT tribute

Sold: $70,100
Collecting Cars

If you want to hit the road and enjoy the delights of a 70s Aussie muscle car, a clever way is in a tribute. Genuine articles are too risky to take out these days. This XW GT tribute looks to be neatly done. Finished in nugget gold with black vinyl trim, it has travelled around 135,000km, has the right combo of a 351ci V8 and a four-slot manual and in every way looks like the real deal, right down to the Super Roo decals.

1977 Ford XC Fairmont GXL

Sold: $42,000
Shannons

The XC was the second facelift of the original XA and arrived in 1976 in conjunction with new emissions laws. Clever marketing by FoMoCo ensured the success of the Fairmont GXL that only ran in this series. It set a new luxury benchmark for Aussie family sedans. This one sports a 4.9lt V8 with an auto and rolls on 12-slot wheels. It’s effectively a Falcon GT in spec. A resto had begun but changed circumstances resulted in its sale.

Honda Civic

When the Civic hit the scene in 1973 it turned the small car sector on its ear. A decade later the third-generation three-door Honda Civic, released here in 1985 did the same. With its steeply raked windscreen, short bonnet, stubby rear end and long roofline, this Civic saw the debut of the D-series four-cylinder single-carby fed 1.5-litre engine. Most sold here with a five-speed manual gearbox. They don’t come up for sale often and Honda aficionados are keen to pounce on any good strays. They are pretty bulletproof with corrosion and wonky CV joints the most common ailments. They still drive well and will turn heads at car shows. Before you buy, take it to a specialist in older Hondas.
