Rare early compact

Toyota’s diminutive 700 Publica was one of the factory’s numerous pitches at the low-cost family car segment and would have been battling the likes of Mini and Anglia for sales.

It was regarded as a well-equipped car for its day, running a twin-cylinder engine with two-speed auto transmission.

A rare sight on the road these days, most if not all the survivors will have undergone some restoration work.

In our Reader Ride Feature on this model, the owner notes just about every aspect of his car came in for attention and the work has been rewarded with a fun Sunday driver.

This example has also been restored and is available near Rockhampton, Qld. It’s on the market at $8400.
