Former Wheels magazine staffer talks about his Mazda MX-5
Bob Hall's Mazda MX-5
Bob Hall's Mazda MX-5 was one of the star cars in our special MX-5 feature for issue #394 (Nov '16). Here, Bob talks about his pre-production teal Miata...
A few years after the MX-5 was launched, its progenitor Bob Hall emigrated to Australia and worked at WHEELS magazine for much of the 1990s. "When we got approval (for the MX-5) it was one of the happiest days of my career," he told his old boss, WHEELS’ former editor Phil Scott, in 2014 just before the launch of the fourth-gen ND Series Mazda MX-5. "But while an enormous amount of fun, it was also absolute hell and agony at times, but I was enjoying myself."
These days, Bob’s back on the tools at a car company (the Chinese manufacturer Geely; he also worked for Proton) and splits his time between the USA and China. He cherishes his pre-production Miata, painted with a test-colour teal and wearing the MX-5s’ internal Mazda program code, P729, on its number plates, in California.
