Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, the 105s clean and distinctive design made it one of the most attractive small coupes of the 1960s and 70s and the earlier Stepnose cars were the first of that body shape and seen as the most desirable.

As confirmed by Alfa Romeo our example is an RHD Australian Stepnose car delivered in 1967 to Alec Mildren Pymble, NSW.

This car has had an engine change at some point to a later 1750 unit providing a useful increase in power and torque over the original. Its also had modifications to reflect a GTA look including the signature wheels, removal of bumpers and a GTA front end grill.

The current owner bought the car from us around a year ago and now needs to part with it due to a change in personal circumstances. During his ownership he has undertaken some mechanical work such as carb tuning, new water pump, hoses and belts.

The previous is well know to us and owned the car for 7 years and at that point had the car recommissioned with work to the brakes, suspension, carbs and a number of other items throughout the car including the fitment of an Alfaholics dual circuit braking system with rebuilt large ATE front callipers. This work was completed by a know expert with Alfa Romeo 105s.

Turn the key and the engine fires up to a familiar Alfa growl. Out on the open road this car is just superb. We have been informed that when the engine was rebuilt and Autodelta racing cams were fitted although there is no proof of this. However, the engine really comes alive after 2000 rpm and certainly invites some spirited driving and is a blast to drive. The gearbox is good with only a small issue on second gear, but this is not significant it can easily be driven without any crunch occurring. It does however jump out of reverse gear and the gear lever needs holding however is perfectly drivable as is and has been this way since the current owner bought the car. A compression test shows excellent results on all cylinders.

The car has been resprayed in an attractive shade of dark red, however it is not the correct Alfa Romeo red as originally delivered. The paint although perfectly presentable from a distance on close inspection it shows areas of blistering due to moisture being in the primer when the topcoats were applied. The front of the car is fine and the roof too however patches of this blistering are present elsewhere.

The GTA replica wheels are from Classic Alfa in the UK and are unmarked and like new. The tyres are fresh and overall, they sit at the right height and look the part. The handling of the car is excellent in part due to the work done to the suspension and brakes.

Inside a fresh carpet set has been fitted which is lovely along with a new Momo California steering wheel. The dash shows the usual cracking but is original. All the seats are very good and show no signs of rips or tears.

This is no show queen and could benefit from some tidy-ups in a few areas, however this is a sorted car and a drivers delight which begs to be taken out in the hills for a good blast. The body is solid, and it looks wonderful on the GTA wheels and overall, there is a lot to like about this car, particularly given the asking price.

All the stainless steel brightwork is available and comes with the car along with invoices for recent work done by the current owner.

These 105s are great drivers cars, and we can see why they are so sought after. Freshly restored cars are still fetching well north of $100,000 and this car represents good buying and to enjoy as is. The car is serviced, on the button and ready to go and ready to be viewed in Victoria.
